PREPARING FOR THE SERMON

Matthew 6:1-18

Context:

In verse one of chapter six, Matthew records Jesus introducing the theme of hidden righteousness. He provides three examples of how to properly conduct religious acts. The Lord’s Prayer in Luke is in a different context than in Matthew. Luke separates the beatitudes (ch 6) and the Lord’s Prayer (ch 11). It seems likely that they record multiple accounts of Jesus’ teachings. The disciples were noted slow learners often asking for clarification or additional instruction. Luke’s later narrative would fit with this understanding.

Structure:

6:1 “beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen”

6:2-4 “your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (v 4)

6:5-13 “Pray then like this:” (v 9)

6:14-15 “Father will also forgive you” (v 14)

6:16-18 “your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (v 18)

Key Ideas:   righteousness, public displays, reward

Some things to think about:

  • How do you choose how to worship or serve?
  • How do you balance Matthew 6 with equally scriptural commands to pray with hands raised (1 Ti 2:8, Ps 134:2) and corporate prayers (Acts 1:14, Jms 5)
