Matthew 10:1-11:1

Context:

After Jesus instructed His disciples to pray for workers to be sent out, He sends out the twelve. Chapter 10 begins with Jesus giving His disciples authority. He proceeds to give instructions and lessons pertaining to their serving and acting on His behalf. Chapter 11 begins with “Jesus finished giving instructions.” The entire chapter is a compact unit.

Within the pericope, the content relays expectations (both positive and negative) the disciples were to expect in their mission.

Structure:

10:1 – Jesus gave them authority

10:2-4 – the names of the twelve

10:5-15 – Jesus sent them out

10:16-23 – it is the Spirit of your Father who is speaking

10:24-25 – if they have (to Me), how more will they (to you)

10:26-31 – so do not fear

10:32-33 – everyone who confesses Me, I will confess

10:34-39 – the one who has lost his life on My account will find it

10:40-42 – the one who receives you receives Me

11:1 – Jesus went on from there to preach and teach

Key Ideas:   ministry, mission, discipleship, authority

Some things to think about:

  • What authority do we have as Christians? (see Matthew 28:18-20)
  • What should you expect from unbelievers?
  • How do you confess Jesus before people?
