PREPARING FOR THE SERMON

Matthew 7:13-29

Context:

In the final section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presents the two options available to people. He phrases it first as two gates which lead to two roads. He then compares two kinds of teachers to two kinds of fruit. The application of good fruit fits the learner as well. It falls in line with the teaching on the gates/roads. Finally, He relates the two paths to two foundations of a house. All 3 analogies illustrate an aspect of being a true child of God.

Previous to this section, Jesus made a transitional phrase about living the Law and the Prophets. As cautioned in the middle of this series of analogies, many people misunderstood what salvation looked like. Matthew does not record an “invitation time.”            The content of the message though would not allow for indecision.

Structure:

13-14 – enter through the narrow gate (v 13)

15-20 – you’ll recognize them by their fruit (v 20)

21-23 – only the one who does the will of my Father (v 21)

24-27 – everyone who hears these words of mine and acts/does not act on them (vv 24, 26)

28-29 – He was teaching them like one who had authority (29)

Key Ideas:   2 roads, authentic salvation, security, lived life

Some things to think about:

  • How do you connect the gate, the road, and the destination? Why do people think they can take a different road and still make it?
