PREPARING FOR THE SERMON

James 3:13-18

Context:

In verse 13, James reintroduces works. James 3:1-12 can be seen as a particular (and even most difficult expression of work stemming from faith). The current pericope ties back to several themes such as “wisdom” (1:5), “deny the truth” (1:8, 16, 22, 26), “mercy” (2:13), “good fruits” (2:14ff.), “unwavering” (1:6).

James closes the section writing about those who cultivate peace. In doing so he prepares his audience for the next topic he picks up in chapter 4.

Structure:

The entire section is one paragraph. The introductory sentence poses a question not to be answered but as a way to introduce the main topic of wisdom being evidenced in actions similar to faith being tied to works.

  • “By his good conduct he should show that his works are done in the gentleness that comes from wisdom.” (3:13b)

The rest of the paragraph defines proper wisdom which describes not only specific actions, but the underpinnings of all wise actions.

Theology:  wisdom, righteousness, works

Some things to think about:

  • Do you think of wisdom as belonging to intellectual, emotional, spiritual, or some other classification?
  • James cautions that some behavior prevalent in their community (and ours) is earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. How do you avoid such behavior?
