PREPARING FOR THE SERMON

Matthew 1-2

Context:

The four gospels each bring the life and ministry of Jesus to life. Matthew is the longest of the four gospels.  It (along with John) was written by one of Jesus’ disciples. The gospels agree with each other but have different emphases.

Matthew’s introduction to Jesus and His ministry begins with genealogy and continues through one half of the Christmas narrative (along with Luke). Matthew focuses on Joseph both in his angelic vision and prominence in taking the family to Egypt.

Structure:

1:1-17 “so all the generations” (v 17)

1:18-25 “that which is conceived in her” (v 20)

2:1-12 “they offered him gifts” (v 11)

2:13-15 “this was to fulfill” (v 15)

2:16-18 “this was to fulfill” (v 17)

2:19-23 “the prophets might be fulfilled” (v 23)

Key Ideas: Christology, prophecy, God’s plan

Some things to think about:

  • What do you think about Christmas outside of November and December?
  • What do you know about how Jesus fulfilled Scriptures? What does it teach us?
