PREPARING FOR THE SERMON
Isaiah 40-42
Context: Chapter 40 returns to long prophetic messages from the narrative break describing events in the life of Hezekiah. The message appears directly after the prophecy of Babylonian deportation. Isaiah 40:2, though, relates the message more to the end of captivity. There is no explicit mention of when the prophecy occurred. The message is directed to Jerusalem, so it was probably eventually delivered to the common people. Chapters 43-44 (if not further) are closely related to 40-42, but the emphasis shifts slightly.
Structure: Isaiah 40 contains a series of questions and answers that establish God in a league of His own. Chapter 41 transitions to discussing different people groups. Isaiah
42 begins with a messianic prophecy. It then contains both a song of praise and calling out of the ones who failed to acknowledge God for His greatness like in 41. Repeatedly in the Old Testament the Israelites are reminded of their unique position in God's covenant that should lead them to highest praise, but so often they fail to recognize God as the sole deity worthy of praise and obedience.
Theology: covenant, revelation, praise, obedience
