PREPARING FOR THE SERMON

James 1:1-8
Context:
James the half-brother of Jesus (Gal 1:19) did not come to faith until after the resurrection (Jn 7:5). He became a leader of the church in Jerusalem (Acts 21:18). He became so well respected that he was given the title James the Just. He was martyred in 62 AD. As a prominent leader of the “home church” in Jerusalem, James carried the authority to write to the churches spread throughout the region. His letter reads similar to a sermon or collection of sermons consistent with the teaching James would have shared with his local congregation.
Structure:
Following a short greeting, James begins by developing some of the themes found throughout the book. Some Greek texts treat vv 2-8 as one paragraph and others separate it into two paragraphs. The flow of thought creates a mini-break and shift in focus between vv 4-5.
1 James…to the twelve tribes (v 1)
2-4 consider it great joy (v 2)
5-8 he should ask God (v 5)
