Matthew 22:23-23:12

Context:

Verses 15-22 have already begun a series of questions from the religious leaders. They were included in the last pericope as they tied into the section beginning with the cleansing of the temple. Verse 23 builds on the theme of questioning Jesus and attempting to establish authority or superiority. In the current set of verses, Jesus responds first to the Sadducees, then the Pharisees, before directly denouncing all the leaders who would position themselves without warrant. Following this section, Jesus speaks about “woes” or consequences directed at the leaders who mislead. While Jesus teaches His disciples further over the next few days, this (including the woes in the next section) is Matthew’s last recorded direct confrontation with the religious leaders.

Structure:

22:23-33 “You are mistaken since you do not understand the Scriptures nor the power of God.” (v 29)

22:34-40 “Upon these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets.” (v 40)

22:41-46 “What do you think about the Christ?” (v 42)

23:1-12 “only One is your Leader, that is, Christ.” (v 11)

Key Ideas: authority, biblical living, love God, Christology

Some things to think about:

  • How do you ensure you understand Scripture correctly?
  • Do you think it is easier to understand love in light of the law and prophets or understand the law and prophets in light of love?
