PREPARING FOR THE SERMON

Matthew 17:22-27

Context:

Matthew 17:22-27 takes place in two different locations. Often changes in location or “characters” in the narrative indicate a shift of focus in the book. In this section however, the thematic element is what connects the two paragraphs. On surface level, the death and resurrection of Jesus is completely different from paying taxes. What connects the sections is the question as to what authority men have over Jesus.

Structure:

Two paragraphs constitute the given section. The first takes place in Galilee. The second takes place in Capernaum.

17:22-23 “The Son of Man is going to be handed over to men; and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day. (vv 22-23)

17:24-27 “Then the sons are exempt.” (v 26)

Key Ideas: lordship, obedience, Christology

Some things to think about:

  • Why would Jesus pay or not pay taxes?
  • What does the relationship between sons and strangers say about the relationship between those in the family of God and those not?
  • Knowing Jesus recently said He was going to be killed and rise again, how do you think Peter dealt with what in comparison probably seemed a menial task (paying taxes)? How do you balance day to day tasks with eternal kingdom minded knowledge?
